The bidding window for major wheelchair fencing events due to be held between next year and 2024 has closed.

The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) offered nations the opportunity to register their interest for competitions including regional Championships for 2022 and 2024 and Wheelchair Fencing World Cup by yesterday.

It had asked for bids prior to the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Sport Congress on Saturday (November 21).

Applications to host events will be assessed by the Sport Commission before the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Executive Committee reviews and approves the sport's calendar through to the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

IWAS chief executive Charmaine Hooper said the organisation accepted a letter that expresses the interest or intention to host an event rather than a full bid owing to financial concerns caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

"This is a great opportunity for new and established Organising Committees to come forward with their proposals to stage competitions in one of the most engaging sports around," said Hooper.

"Not only that, but the events will also follow the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and some will be part of the build-up to Paris 2024.

"We want to expand the number of countries on the wheelchair fencing circuit, and we hope that by giving organisers longer to plan and prepare we can do just that."

Regional Championships in Europe, the Americas and Asia were among the events up for grabs, as well as the under-17 and under-23 World Championships in 2023.
