International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing is set to change its name to World Para Fencing following a motion at the governing body's Congress.

The new name is likely to be implemented in time for the start of the 2022 season, the IWAS said.

It will see IWAS Wheelchair Fencing become World Para Fencing after the postponed Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games next year.

"Following the vote, consultation will begin with partners and work will take place to implement the new title for the start of the 2022 season, following the Paralympic Games in 2021," the IWAS said.

Should the change be confirmed, it would see wheelchair fencing align with other sports on the Paralympic Games programme.

Pál Szekeres was re-elected unopposed as chairman of IWAS Wheelchair Fencing during the Congress.

Nine people were elected to the Executive Committee of the body after a motion to expand the number of members-at-large was approved.

A motion to ensure a representative from each active region - Asia, the Americas and Europe - and an equal-representation position to promote gender equity was also passed.
