Norway’s Johannes Thingnes Boe and Sweden’s Hanna Oeberg secured sprint victories as the early International Biathlon Union (IBU) World Cup season continued in Kontiolahti.

Reigning men’s World Cup champion Boe had been forced to settle for second place in the men’s 20 kilometre individual event yesterday, behind compatriot Sturla Holm Laegreid.

He returned to the top of the World Cup podium after a clean shooting performance in the 10km sprint event today.

Boe completed the event in a time of 23min 54sec to earn a dominant victory.

“It was full attack from the start to the finish,” Boe said.

“My three loops were quite well skied.

“I had a good plan for my prone today, to attack more, even though one bullet was really lucky.

“But I went on and shot clean.

“That made me really secure for the standing after a good feeling yesterday.

“To shoot clean and have a win; it is early in the season, but I like it.”

Sebastian Samuelsson finished as the runner-up at 44 seconds behind Boe, with the Swedish biathlete having received one penalty.

The podium was completed by his compatriot Martin Ponsiluoma, who also received one penalty to end 48 seconds behind the winner.

Victory saw Boe head the early World Cup standings, with Samuelsson and Laegreid completing the top three after strong starts.

Oeberg tops the women’s World Cup leaderboard after she produced a dominant display in the women’s 7.5km sprint event.

The Swedish athlete led at each time check on the course and shot clean throughout the event.

Oeberg completed the competition in a time of 21:01.

Norway’s Marte Olsbu Roeiseland finished as the runner-up at 24 seconds down, with compatriot Karoline Offigstad Knotten a further 14 seconds adrift in third.

The sprint competitions concluded the first of back-to-back World Cup stages in Kontiolahti.

Racing will resume on December 3.

Competitions are taking place without spectators amid concerns over coronavirus.

Seven teams recorded positive tests prior to the World Cup opener, leading to members of the Moldovan, Russian and Romanian teams being quarantined.
