Athletes competing on the International Biathlon Union (IBU) World Cup circuit will face an unfamiliar scenario when they compete in Kontiolahti for the second consecutive event of the series from tomorrow.

The Finnish resort is hosting the first two World Cups of the season as part of the IBU's efforts to reduce the risk posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The second event begins tomorrow and concludes on Sunday (December 6), and follows the season opener at the same venue last weekend.

Seven teams recorded positive tests prior to the first World Cup of the campaign, leading to members of the Moldovan, Russian and Romanian teams being quarantined.

The IBU has not reported any further positive COVID-19 cases among athletes ahead of action resuming with the men's 10 kilometres and women's 7.5km sprint races tomorrow.

Norway’s Johannes Thingnes Bø and Sweden’s Hanna Öberg won the sprint races last Sunday (November 29) and will be hoping to repeat the feat in Kontiolahti.

The men's 12.5km pursuit competition and women's 4x6km relay are scheduled to take place on Saturday (December 5), before the event concludes with the men's 4x7.5km relay and women's 10km pursuit on Sunday.

Races are being held behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 crisis.
