America's Sabrina Sobhy achieved a shock defeat against Egyptian ninth seed Salma Hany at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Black Ball Squash Open in Cairo.

Sobhy, younger sister of Amanda Sobhy, is ranked number 22 in the world and is unseeded for the PSA World Tour Gold event. 

Her opponent Hany is the world number 10 and seeded ninth. 

Sobhy battled to an 11-8, 13-11, 4-11, 6-11, 11-9 victory in the opening round of the contest at the Black Ball Sporting Club.

Her sister Amanda Sobhy was also triumphant, with the sixth seed dispatching compatriot Olivia Fiechter 11-8, 11-7, 11-5.

There was even more success for the United States when Olivia Clyne recorded an 8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8 result against Mariam Metwally of Egypt.

American Haley Mendez was defeated 0-12, 11-6, 11-3, 11-3 by Egyptian Nadine Shahin, however. 

Top seed and world number one Nour El Sherbini was on impressive form as she comfortably beat fellow Egyptian Zeina Mickawy 11-4, 11-3, 11-9.

Egypt's fourth seed Hania El Hammamy won 11-6, 12-10, 11-3 against Canada's Danielle Letourneau, while Welsh eighth seed Tesni Evans came from behind to defeat Lucy Turmel of England 6-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-4.

Nele Gilis of Belgium eased past Egypt's Nada Abbas 13-11, 11-6, 11-5. 

The first round of the women's contest continues tomorrow.
