Ukrainian Illia Kovtun underlined his burgeoning talent by winning the junior all-around crown at the European Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Turkish city Mersin.

Kovtun, a quadruple gold medallist at last year’s European Youth Summer Olympic Festival, produced scores ranging from 13.066 on high bar to 14.133 on vault as he recorded a winning total of 81.465.

It was the 17-year-old’s second title of the tournament after playing an instrumental role in Ukraine’s victory in the team competition two days ago.

Team mate Volodymyr Kostiuk followed closely on his heels as he notched 80.198, with his best score of 14.000 coming on the floor.

Hungary’s Krisztián Balázs, who won bronze on the horizontal bar at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, overcame a fall off the pommel horse to score 13.500 on both vault and high bar and 13.900 on parallel bars to clinch third spot with 78.566.

Romania’s Robert Burtănete climbed from 13th in qualifications to fourth, with Bulgaria’s Teodor Trifonov finishing fifth.

Israel’s Eyal Indig made the best improvement as he jumped from 25th to sixth.

The top eight also included Lithuania’s Gytis Chasazyrovas and Turkey’s Bora Tarhan.

The competition continues tomorrow with the senior team final before the apparatus finals take place on Sunday (December 13).

Teams from Russia, Italy and Britain pulled out of the event because of concerns over coronavirus.

Baku in Azerbaijan was due to stage the competition before it was moved to Mersin due to the coronavirus pandemic.
