For the second time in three months, Mostafa Asal upset Paul Coll in a five-game classic ©PSA

Defending champion Karim Abdel Gawad and New Zealand's Paul Coll were both knocked out of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Black Ball Squash Open in Cairo as two top-four seeds exited the competition in the second round.

Fourth seed Coll was the first of the two to fall, losing 6-11, 11-8, 11-3, 4-11, 11-8 to Egypt's 11th seed, Mostafa Asal.

Asal had also defeated Coll in five games in the Egyptian Open quarter-finals in October.

Defending champion Gawad, seeded third, followed Coll after coming unstuck in an all-Egyptian tie against Fares Dessouky, seeded ninth.

Despite winning two of the first three games, Gawad crumbled in the latter stages and Dessouky was able to win 11-6, 9-11, 3-11, 11-2, 11-3.

Conversely, top seed Ali Farag showed few signs of vulnerability and advanced in straight games, beating fellow Egyptian Omar Mosaad 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 in 33 minutes.

World champion Tarek Momen, seeded second, needed 41 minutes to come from behind and knock out Mazen Hesham in another all-Egyptian clash, winning 8-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-9.

Peru's fifth seed Diego Elías won in just 44 minutes against Grégory Gaultier of France and Egypt's eighth seed Mohamed Abouelghar followed soon after, thrashing another Frenchman, Gregoire Marche, in just 31 minutes.

Both were three-game victories.

Colombia's sixth seed Miguel Rodríguez looked to be heading for an upset loss at two games down, but a superb comeback saw him fend off Zahed Salem of Egypt 5-11, 9-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-6.

In another five-game affair, Welshman Joel Makin - seeded seventh - beat James Willstrop of England 11-7, 8-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9.

The PSA World Tour Gold tournament continues tomorrow, with all four quarter-finals scheduled.
