The final round of the 2020 Rugby Europe Championship is set to be held in February next year before attention begins to turn towards Rugby World Cup qualification.

This year’s Rugby Europe Championship was postponed in March following the outbreak of coronavirus across the continent.

Georgia had already clinched the title after four straight wins, but with one game remaining the relegation situation has yet to be decided.

Rugby Europe has announced the fifth round of fixtures will take place on February 6 and 7 with champions Georgia hosting Russia and Spain welcoming Portugal.

At the bottom of the table, relegation-threatened Romania face a crucial home clash against Belgium who sit just two points above their rivals.

The team that finishes bottom are then due to meet the Netherlands, the winners of the Rugby Europe Trophy, for a place in European rugby’s second-tier international tournament on February 20 or 21.

Just two weeks later, the 2021 edition is set to begin, although the winner of the playoff match will not play their opening match until July.

The first four rounds are expected to be held from March 6 to 28 with the remaining fixtures scheduled to be held during the World Rugby international window in July.

The Rugby Europe Championship 2021 marks the start of the qualification process for the Rugby World Cup 2023 for the European region.

The next two editions of the event will offer two direct places for the top two teams in March 2022 with the third best side going into the final global qualification repechage tournament.

The top-ranked Championship side will be placed in Pool C along with Wales, Australia, Fiji and the winner of the qualification tournament.

The runner-up will face defending champions South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and a qualifier from Asia or the Pacific in Pool B.
