The 2021 IWAS Anti-Doping Code came into force on January 1 alongside the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code.

In addition, the 2021 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list of prohibited substances and methods, Athletes’ Anti-Doping Rights Act and a series of international standards are now active. 

The 2021 World Anti-Doping Code, which follows on from previous versions that entered into effect in 2004, 2009 and 2015, includes a number of changes to global anti-doping policies, rules and regulations within anti-doping organisations (ADOs) around the world. 

It works in conjunction with the eight international standards that encourage consistency among ADOs in technical areas. 

IWAS's new Anti-Doping Code was developed in partnership with WADA and reflects the changes published in the 2021 World Anti-Doping Code. 

IWAS athletes, support personnel and members have been reminded that they must adhere to the new codes, new list of prohibited substances and methods, and international standards.

"As a former athlete myself I hold the principles of fair play close to my heart," said IWAS President Rudi van den Abbeele.

"I encourage all athletes, staff and our members to make sure they fully understand their rights and responsibilities for anti-doping.

"I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with getting the IWAS Anti-Doping Code approved by WADA. 

"It is a huge amount of work, not least because of IWAS’ dual role as an International Federation for wheelchair fencing and major event organiser for multi-sport competitions such as the World Games. 

"We are proud to have a Code that meets all of our responsibilities and allows us to be part of the fight against doping.

"IWAS will continue to support the community through education and awareness-raising. 

"We must work together to tackle anti-doping and ensure a level-playing field."
