Paralympic medallists Ali Jawad and Zoe Newson are among a 13-athlete British squad named for the World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Manchester later this year.

The Manchester World Cup, from March 25 to 28, is one of five scheduled before the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

British Weight Lifting has named 13 athletes in its team for the home event, which will be the athletes' first in-person competition since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Jawad and Tom Smith will compete in the men's under-54 kilograms category, Sean Clare in the men's under-59kg and Mark Swan in the under-65kg.

Nathaniel Wilding and Micky Yule are both due to lift in the men's under-72kg, with Liam McGarry taking part in the men's over-107kg.

Newson, at under-41kg, headlines the women's team.

Olivia Broome and Charlotte McGuinness will compete at under-50kg, Kim Dean at under-61kg, Rebecca Bedford at under-67kg and Louise Sugden at under-86kg.

British Weight Lifting performance director Tom Whittaker described the selection as "an exciting team with a fantastic mixture of experienced world-class athletes and emerging talent."

"After such a long period without competition, we’re extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to compete at this crucial qualifier on home soil," Whittaker added.

"The athletes can’t wait to restart their qualification journey and hopefully complete the eligibility pathway for the Games.

"A home World Cup also means we’re able to give valuable international competition opportunities to a number of our young athletes and I’m looking forward to seeing how they perform in the world-class environment.

"Although it’s disappointing that we won’t be able to compete in front of a home crowd this year, we know our loyal GB fans will be cheering us on from home."

Britain won four gold medals, two silver and three bronze at last year's World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Manchester.
