Tom Brady will seek to make further history at the 55th Super Bowl in Florida today as he plays for Tampa Bay Buccaneers against defending champions Kansas City Chiefs at the age of 43.

When Brady made his last Super Bowl appearance - for his long-time team New England Patriots in February 2019 - he set the individual record of six Super Bowl victories and helped his team equal the record of six wins established by Pittsburgh Steelers.

He also became, at 41, the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

Two years on, as his new team seeks the unique experience of winning the highest honour in the game at their home venue - the game was fixed for the Raymond James Stadium this season - Brady can not only extend his age record for quarterbacks but also become the oldest player ever to earn a Super Bowl ring.

In some reference lists Brady is already noted as holding this distinction, but those lists only refer to those who start the final, rather than kickers and punters who come on for specialist duties.

In the latter category Jeff Feagles was two months older than Brady was in 2019 when he helped the New York Giants to win the Super Bowl on February 3, 2008.

"It’s been a great journey thus far, we’ve put the work in," Brady said after victory in Green Bay to claim the National Football Conference Championship.

"We know what we’re playing for, it’ll be a great opponent and an exciting couple of weeks for us.

"It’s the ultimate team sport.

"We’ve had a lot of people work really hard to get to this point.

"It’s a tough journey to get here.

"To go on the road and win another play-off game, a home Super Bowl for the first time in history, whenever you do something for the first time, it’s usually a pretty good thing."

Brady has already joined the ranks of elite performers across all sports who have defied the so-called age barrier, maintaining the highest standards beyond all normal expectations.
