Iranian squash players are set to receive equipment from the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran (NOCIR) in a bid to grow the sport in the country.

NOCIR President Reza Salehi Amiri has pledged to supply rackets, balls, clothes and footwear to the national junior and senior men’s and women’s squash teams, according to World Squash.

Amiri has also agreed to provide transport for players looking to attended overseas tournaments over the next 12 months.

His pledge to the Iran Squash Federation comes after Amiri attended a squash camp at the Enghelab Sports Complex in the National Squash Centre, where he spent 45 minutes discussing the future of the sport.

Masoud Gharehziaeddini, director of international affairs for the Iran Squash Federation, said the NOCIR’s support was a big boost for players due to the increasing cost of equipment.

"Considering that squash is not an Olympic sport, the presence of the President of the National Olympic Committee at the squash complex raised the importance of squash among other officials of related organisations," Gharehziaeddini said.

"The media paid close attention to the movements of this sport and the successes of this Federation, and his visit was prestigious for the squash federation.

"The price of equipment has increased and the athletes cannot easily provide their equipment like they did in the past.

"This problem has now been solved and the equipment will be supplied by the National Olympic Committee.

"They are also going to provide air tickets for international tournaments for a year, which will increase the interactions of Iranian players with leading countries in squash.

"This will benefit the further growth of squash in our country."

The Persian Gulf Squash Centre opened in Birjand last year, while National Squash House is set to open in capital Tehran later in 2021.
