More than 70 Para-archers from 11 nations are taking part in the seventh edition of the event.

Back-to-back Paralympic champion Zahra Nemati of Iran is among them, and led recurve women's open qualifying with a score of 620.

"In regard to my preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, this is a very important competition and the score is good to start with," said Nemati. 

"But I faced difficultly with the wind. 

"I hope I can come out with better performance tomorrow."

On 596, Merve Nur Eroğlu of Turkey was second.

Frenchman Guillaume Toucoullet led recurve men's open qualifying with 620 points - eight ahead of David Ivan of Slovakia.

Harvinder Singh, a 2018 Asian Para Games gold medallist for India, placed third.

Ukraine’s Serhiy Atamanenko led men's compound open qualification, scoring 618, as did second-placed Shyam Sundar Swami of India.

On 684, 11 points ahead of Turkey's Öznur Cüre, Russian Stepanida Artakhinova topped women's compound open qualification.

Competition continues tomorrow.

World Archery Para Archery Committee chair Dominique Ohlmann is in Dubai and said there was confidence organisers could stage a good, safe event.

"We are happy to be here and plan the World Championships for next year," Ohlmann commented.

"We are very confident that this Championships will be as successful as the Para Athletics Grand Prix last week. 

"We hope that all the teams follow the rules which is also the part of safety and success of the Championships."
