Switzerland's Jonas Frei became the youngest bobsleigh pilot to win the gold medal at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation Para-Sport World Championships after securing victory in St Moritz.

Frei converted his overnight lead into the world title as he ended the competition at the Olympia Bobrun St Moritz-Celerina in a total time of 4min 53.52sec.

The 23-year-old finished 0.68sec clear of defending champion Lonnie Bissonnette of Canada, despite the Swiss recording the fifth-fastest time of the fourth run.

Bissonnette was forced to settle for the silver medal in 4:54.20, with bronze going to Sweden's Sebastian Westin, 0.03 shy of the Canadian.

Guro Konstanse Frønsdal of Norway was the highest placed female racer, tying for sixth with Austria's Hermann Ellmauer.

Victory saw Frei, competing in just the 10th race of his career, become the first Swiss Para bobsleigh world champion.

Athletes on the Para-sport circuit are now set to head to La Plagne in France for World Cup races on March 6 and 7.

The World Championships took place less than a month after the International Paralympic Committee confirmed Para bobsleigh would not be included on the programme for the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
