The European University Sports Association (EUSA) has presented the COVID-19 protocols which will be in place during this year's European Universities Games to its members.

Organisers of the event in Belgrade and the EUSA held an online meeting with National University Sports Associations to discuss plans for the Games, set to run from July 14 to 27.

Those found to have violated the protocols, designed to ensure the Games can go ahead safely during the pandemic, risk being thrown out of the event, the EUSA said.

While the full plan has not been released, it is expected to mirror parts of the "playbooks" for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which detail rules on social distancing, testing and participants' behaviour at the event.

"Formulated by experts along with local health authorities, the protocol covers hygiene measures across all areas, with solutions in place to ensure the safety and protection of all athletes, volunteers, officials and organisers," the EUSA said.

"The health and safety of all involved at EUG2021 remain both EUSA and the Organising Committee’s primary concern, and following Serbia’s current progress in terms of overcoming the pandemic, organisers are confident that a safe, successful and memorable event will be enjoyed by all."

The EUSA also praised organisers' progress during the meeting, attended by more than 50 participants representing in excess of 30 countries.

Venues, security, accommodation and catering were among the other Games-related topics discussed.

EUSA sports manager Besim Aliti said organisers had made "immense strides forward across all organisational departments".

More than 5,000 student-athletes from in excess of 400 universities are set to take part at the Games.
