Organisers have confirmed dates for the rescheduled World Para Swimming European Open Championships, the biggest para swimming event before the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Competition is now due to take place at the Penteada Swimming Complex in Funchal, the capital of Madeira, from May 16 to 22.

It was originally due to take place from May 17 to 23 2020, but was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

As an Open Championships, the event is open to athletes from outside Europe, and with its new positioning on the calendar will act as an opportunity to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

Despite being pushed back by 12 months, the competition will still retain the name Madeira 2020.

The Madeira 2020 programme includes all disciplines due to be held at Tokyo 2020, as well as two new individual events and three mixed relay competitions.

The entry deadline for the European Open Championships is March 26, with classification due to take place between May 13 and 15.

Coronavirus guidelines for the event are due to be issued to participating nations in April.

This is scheduled to be the second European Open Championships to be held in the Portuguese region, which also hosted the event in 2016 in the build-up to the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

Ireland hosted the last edition of the European Open Championships in 2018 when more than 500 athletes from 40 nations took part.

Ukraine topped the medals table in Dublin with a total of 106 medals, consisting of 33 golds, 44 silvers and 29 bronzes.
