Joel Makin triumphed in a thrilling five-game match against England’s Patrick Rooney to advance to the third round of the CIB Professional Squash Association Black Ball Squash Open in Cairo.

The Welshman suffered an early blow in the second round match at the Black Ball Sporting Club, as Rooney edged the opening game 12-10.

Makin responded impressively by winning the second game 11-2, before winning the third 11-8.

Rooney would force a deciding game by winning the fourth, but Makin ultimately secured a hard-fought 10-12, 11-2, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8 victory.

Egypt’s Mazen Hesham will be Makin’s opponent in the next round.

Hesham was leading 11-9, 13-15, 11-6 against Iker Pajares Bernabeu, before the Spaniard was forced to retire from the contest.

India’s Saurav Ghosal advanced to the third round in impressive fashion, as he overcame England’s Tom Richards 11-3, 11-8, 11-5.

Ghosal will face tournament second seed Mohamed ElShorbagy, after the Egyptian star beat France’s Baptiste Masotti 14-12, 11-7, 11-9.

ElShorbagy’s brother Marwan won his second round match earlier in the day, as the second seed beat Karim El Hammamy 11-9, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6 in an all-Egyptian contest.

Marwan ElShorbagy faces another Egyptian in the third round when he meets Youssef Ibrahim, who beat France’s Lucas Serme 4-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-3, 11-6.

France’s Gregory Gaultier secured a straight game 11-7, 11-8, 15-13 win over Egypt’s Youssef Soliman in another second round tie.
