The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has asked the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) for a "full explanation" on the issues that occurred during the chaotic National Para Athletics Championships in Bengaluru last week.

The PCI has come under fire from athletes and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) after the Championships were plagued with problems, including poor wheelchair access at venues, an alleged lack of COVID-19 testing and limited social distancing.

Video footage from the event also showed some throwing competitions had to be held using the torch lights on mobile phones because of schedule delays and organisers not using the available floodlights.

The PCI has claimed some of the issues that arose were caused by a late switch of venue from Chennai after the local Government withdrew its hosting permission.

It has already been forced to clarify the lack of access and facilities for wheelchair athletes to the SAI.

The PCI will now have to mount a similar defence to the IPC, which was almost certainly concerned by the scenes and footage from an event that forms part of the qualification process for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

"The IPC has had feedback from various sources regarding issues surrounding the Championships," an IPC spokesperson told insidethegames.

"As a result we have contacted the NPC for a full explanation."

Events were held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium and Vidyanagar Stadium in Bengaluru.

More than 900 athletes took part in the Championships.
