Russia clinched both team foil gold medals as the Junior and Cadet World Fencing Championships continued in Egypt’s capital Cairo.

The Russian junior team of Vitalina Anaschenkova, Adelina Bikbulatova, Angelina Kononova and Daria Malysheva overcame the Philippines and South Korea in their opening two matches at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex.

The quartet guaranteed a medal by overcoming rivals Ukraine 45-37 in the semi-finals, leaving the top seeds with a gold-medal contest against the United States.

The US team had seen off Spain, Canada and Romania to advance to the final.

Zander Rhodes, Lauren Scruggs, May Tieu, Maia Mei Weintraub turned in a strong performance in the final, but were unable to prevent Russia earning a narrow 45-43 victory.

Ukraine’s Kateryna Budenko, Kristina Petrova, Alina Poloziuk and Olga Sopit earned the bronze medal, as they beat Romania 45-29.

The men’s final also saw Russia and the US go head-to-head, with Russia winning 45-32.

Egor Barannikov, individual junior foil champion Zakhar Kozlov, Daniil Kravtsov and Stepan Martynovich made up the victorious Russian team.

They beat Brazil and Chile before upsetting second seeds France to reach the final, while the US enjoyed wins over Qatar, South Korea and Poland.

The American team comprised Kenji Bravo, Ashton Daniel, Marcello Olivares and cadet gold medallist Daniel Zhang

France won the bronze medal with Valerian Castanie, Paul Antoine de Belval, Constant Roger and Armand Spichiger earning a 45-40 win over Poland.

The junior epée events will take place tomorrow.
