Gorhe was admitted to hospital after being diagnosed with coronavirus, and was discharged, only to be re-admitted to try and treat mucormycosis.

The rare fungal infection has been linked to numerous COVID-19 patients in India, and is thought to be brought on by steroid treatment.

A few hours before Gorhe passed away, her father also died from coronavirus.

India has recorded the second-most COVID-19 infections in the world, with more than 26.5 million confirmed cases to date.

In excess of 300,000 people have died.

Gorhe was the coach of the Indian pistol team, and previously served as the national coach of the Sri Lankan shooting team.

Gorhe also set up a shooting coaching centre called Excel Shooting in Nashik in the north of India, where she helped train hundreds of students.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) mourned the death of Gorhe.

"With great sorrow we inform that Ms Monali Gorhe, pistol coach of core group and an efficient technical official passed away today due to black fungus," read an NRAI statement.

"It's a tragedy that her father also died today.

"The shooting fraternity mourns the sad demise of a hard-working human being."
