Forty-eight hours after helping to seal Switzerland’s place at Tokyo 2020 with a third-place finish in the World Triathlon Mixed Relay Olympic Qualification Event, Spirig enjoyed individual success in the Portuguese capital.

The 39-year-old, a gold medallist at London 2012, claimed her sixth World Triathlon Cup win of her career after finishing in a winning time of 1hr 59 min 05secs.

"I am very happy, it’s great to be back on the podium and on the top of the podium, I really appreciate it," said Spirig who also clinched silver at Rio 2016.

"I don’t know how many World Cups I will still do so it’s amazing to win again here."

Ireland’s Carolyn Hayes clinched silver in 1:59.17, while American Kirsten Kasper secured bronze in 1:59.39.

"I am a bit annoyed that I lost it on the last lap but there are worst people you can come second to [than Spirig]," said Hayes.

"I kept thinking, just keep running, don’t look back.

"I wanted to come off with the best and really test myself.

"It gives me confidence moving forward.

"Hopefully it’s enough to give me a ticket to Tokyo."

Kasper is back on podium positions after almost two years of injury struggles.

"It means a lot for me," said Kasper.

"To come back after Yokohama and have a better run and honestly show what I know I am capable of is just what I came here for."

The World Triathlon Cup was the second race to take place within the recently-reopened Olympic qualification window which runs until June 21.

Arzachena in Italy is scheduled to host the next World Triathlon Cup event on May 29 and 30.
