Kumar was arrested in Delhi on Sunday (May 23).

Sagar Dhankar died after a fight between rival wrestlers at an academy in India's capital city on May 4.

Kumar was allegedly identified as being involved by another wrestler who sustained injuries in the attack.

The 38-year-old was alleged to have gone on the run following the incident, before being arrested by police late last week.

Kumar was questioned by police on Monday (May 24).

WFI secretary general Tomar claims the arrest of Kumar has damaged the image of wrestling in the country.

Tomar also cited the case of wrestling coach Sukhwinder Mor, who allegedly gunned down five people, including rival coach Manoj Malik, in February.

"I must say that the image of Indian wrestling has got hurt badly by this," Tomar said, according to the Indian Express.

"But we have nothing to do with what wrestlers do away from the mat.

"We are concerned with their on-mat performance.

"Not only this, but the incident that happened in February had also tarnished the image of Indian wrestling.

"The sport has struggled hard in earning a reputation because for long wrestlers were known only as a bunch of goons."

According to Agence France Presse, Kumar's lawyers have claimed he is innocent and have accused police of bias.

Kumar won a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, before securing a silver medal four years later in the men’s under-66-kilogram freestyle event at London 2012.

Kumar carried India’s flag in the Opening Ceremony at London 2012.

He was crowned world champion in 2010.

The same year saw Kumar earn gold at his home Commonwealth Games in Delhi, where the wrestler also handed the Queen’s Baton to Prince Charles at the Opening Ceremony.

Kumar secured gold medals at both Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018.

He was yesterday suspended as senior commercial manager for Indian Railways due to the ongoing investigation.
