Warner, who began with a 100m win in 10.14, is seeking to become the first six-time winner at this traditional meeting in Austria having already equalled the record of five wins jointly established by former world and Olympic champions Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic and Sweden’s Carolina Kluft.

His compatriot Pierce Lepage is currently second on 4421 points, with Vitaliy Zhuk of Belarus third on 4279.

Germany’s world champion Niklaus Kaul is 11^th on 4126, with world silver medallist Maicel Uibo of Estonia 16^th on 4070.

Annie Kunz of the United States is overnight leader in the heptathlon with 3897 points, from Anouk Vetter of The Netherlands, the 2016 European champion, who announced before this competition that she was “back in the game” following longstanding injuries.

Vetter trails by just 27 points, with Hungary’s Xenia Kriszan third on 3831.

Kunz’s compatriot Kendell Williams is also in contention, sixth on 3784, but for the other favoured American competitor Erica Bougard the day ended ignominiously as she dropped out after failing to record a mark in the third event of the shot put.

Nadine Broersen of The Netherlands also dropped out before the day’s concluding 200 metres despite being fourth overall after three events.
