Thomas Schädler has been appointed the new head coach of the German women's ice hockey team.

Schädler's first major outing as head coach will be the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Championship, which is now due to be played in Calgary in Canada.

Christian Künast was the last permanent coach of the side, but is now the German Ice Hockey Federation's (DEB) sports director.

Franziska Busch was in temporary charge, but the delaying of the IIHF Women's World Championship for COVID-19 reasons has given the DEB time to bring in Schädler.

Busch will return to coaching the under-18 women's national team.

Schädler had been assisting Busch and has experience coaching the German men's under-16 and under-18 sides.

Schädler has promised to approach the role with "enthusiasm", and as well as the World Championship, Germany's women will be playing in a Winter Olympic qualifier this year.

The nation is due to stage a four-team qualifier in Füssen in November, with Denmark, Austria, the hosts and one other side battling it out for a place at Beijing 2022.

The World Championship has been given new dates in August.

"I would like to thank the Executive Committee and sports director Christian Künast for their trust," Schädler added.

"I would like to develop what Christian has built up and further promote the acceptance of women's ice hockey."
