Just three of the women’s top 10 seeds will head into the second week of the French Open after Elina Svitolina became the latest casualty in Paris.

The Ukrainian sixth seed was sent crashing to a 6-3, 6-2 defeat by Barbora Krejčíková of the Czech Republic in the third round.

Her exit comes after world number one Ashleigh Barty bowed out through injury, second seed Naomi Osaka withdrew and Karolína Plíšková of the Czech Republic, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and Bianca Andreescu of Canada also suffered defeats in the opening week of the Grand Slam.

Sofia Kenin, the highest seed in the tournament, faced joining that list after surrendering a 3-0 lead to lose the opening set.

But the American, who reached last year’s final at Roland Garros, responded in fine style, completing a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over compatriot Jessica Pegula.

Seventh seed Serena Williams of the United States avoided an early upset with victory yesterday, while reigning champion and eighth seed Iga Świątek of Poland safely came through her third round encounter today.

Świątek was tested early on before storming to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win over 30th seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia to extend her winning streak to 20 at the French Open.

The Pole will next face 18-year-old Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, who became the youngest woman from her country to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam after a 6-1, 6-2 win over Russian Varvara Gracheva.

American Sloane Stephens continued her fine form with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph against Karolína Muchová of the Czech Republic in one hour and 55 minutes to set up a meeting with Krejčíková.

Ons Jabeur of Turkey advanced to the second week in Paris after coming from a set down to beat Magda Linette of Poland 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

In another all-American battle, Jennifer Brady pulled out through injury after Coco Gauff claimed the first set 6-1.

Greece's Maria Sakkari overcame Belgium Elise Mertens 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2.

In the men’s draw, eighth seed Roger Federer of Switzerland came through a marathon battle in four sets against Germany's Dominik Koepfer in the night session game on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Three of the four sets went to tie-breaks, with Federer winning 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 in a contest that lasted three hours and 35 minutes and finished at 12.45am local time.

Federer's rivals Rafael Nadal of Spain and Novak Djokovic of Serbia enjoyed considerably easier rides powering through to the fourth round with straight sets victories.

It is the 50th time Nadal has reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam as he saw off Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to remain on track for a 14th Roland Garros title.

Nadal will now meet Italian teenager Jannik Sinner who battled past Mikael Ymer of Sweden 6-1, 7-5, 6-3.

World number one Novak Djokovic continued his quest for a 19th Grand Slam that would put him one behind Nadal and Swiss legend Roger Federer in the all-time list with a  6-1, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania.

Like Nadal, Djokovic will also come up against an Italian rising star in the fourth round as Lorenzo Musetti awaits.

The 19-year-old became the sixth player since 2000 to reach the fourth round on his Grand Slam debut after he defeated 2018 semi-finalist and compatriot Marco Cecchinato 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in three hours and seven minutes.

"I have a lot of feelings right now, and I'm not thinking about the match," said Musetti.

"I [will] try to enjoy the win of today a bit, and then tomorrow I will focus on trying to beat Novak and try to go forward."

Tenth seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina and Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany also advanced to the second week.

Schwartzman defeated German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, while Struff saw off Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.
