Teenager Yuko Saso has made history after becoming the first player from the Philippines to win a major in golf, following a playoff victory in the US Women's Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco in the United States.

The 19-year-old beat Japan's Nasa Hataoka on the third hole of a sudden death round after they both tied on four under par.

American Lexi Thompson missed a putt on the 18th that would have got her in the playoff too.

Saso recovered from two double bogeys in her first three holes to become the joint youngest champion at the US Women's Open.

She matched South Korea's Inbee Park achievement of being the youngest champion at 19 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Park finished one over par at this year's edition.

Despite her loss in the playoff, the final day was a strong one for Hataoka, who started six strokes off the lead.

With three birdies in the last six holes, the Japanese player took Saso to sudden death, but could only score pars in the three extra holes.

Saso won the competition with a 10-foot birdie putt.

Thompson was fourth on three under par ahead of compatriot Megan Khang and China's Shanshan Feng on two under par.

Angel Yin of the United States finished sixth on par.
