The United States won two of the five freestyle finals that took place today in the United World Wrestling’s final Ranking Series event, the Poland Open, at the Ursynow Arena in Warsaw.

While the freestyle event at the final point-scoring event for top-four seeding at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics lacked Turkish wrestlers - following the team’s late withdrawal by their federation - the competition level remained fiercely high.

Fittingly the evening concluded with Mohammadhossein MohammadIan winning an all-Iranian 97 kilograms final against Ali Khali Shabanibengar on decision after they had finished at 1-1.

Iran also claimed one of the two bronze medals through Alireza Karimimachiani, with Kazakhstan’s Alisher Yergali taking the other.

The first United States gold of the night, in the 70kg final, was guaranteed, as it was between two US wrestlers, and Alec Pantaleo - who had beaten Azerbaijan’s world champion Haji Aliyev in the semi-final - earned a place on the top of the podium after defeating James Green 5-3.

Aliyev claimed bronze after beating Georgia’s Zurabi Iakobishvili 2-1.

The second US victory came in the 86kg category, where Zahid Valencia defeated Georgia’s Sandro Aminashvili 10-0.

Bronze medals went to Poland’s Cezary Sadowski and Myles Amine of San Marino.

Slovakia’s Akhsarbek Gulaev earned the 79kg gold after finishing at 2-2 with Rashid Kurbanov of Uzbekistan.

Bronze medals went to Mateusz Kampik of Poland and Vasyl Mykhailov of Ukraine.

In the 57kg class, Stevan Andria Micic of Serbia won gold, Beka Bujiashvili of Georgia took silver and Makhmudjon Shavkatov of Uzbekistan won bronze.
