Four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Mo Farah has been thrown a lifeline to make the men's 10,000 metres standard for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with an invitational race being added to the British Athletics Championships later this month in Manchester for him to run.

Back-to-back Olympic champion Farah will need to beat the qualifying standard of 27min 28sec to have a chance at selection for the Games.

Currently two Britons have the Olympic standard - Sam Atkin ran 27:26.58 in California in December and Marc Scott ran 27:10.41, also in California, in February.

Patrick Dever and Charlie Hicks have additionally run faster than Farah this year, but do not have the Olympic standard.

Farah could only run 27:50.64 at the and European 10,000m Cup - which doubled as British 10,000m Championships - at the University of Birmingham on June 5.

As the second Briton across the line at the event, behind Scott, Farah will be guaranteed a place at the Games if he makes the standard.

And the addition of this invitational race in Manchester gives the 38-year-old the chance to do so.

The British Athletics Championships are set to be held on June 25 at the Manchester Regional Arena.

Domestic and international athletes who have a personal best inside 29 minutes are eligible to compete in the invitational race.

Farah's loss at the European Cup was his first over the distance since the 2011 World Championships in South Korean city Daegu.

One of Britain's greatest Olympians, Farah won back-to-back 5,000m and 10,000m titles at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games.
