The International Cycling Union (UCI) has awarded the 2021 Trials World Championships to Spain, with the event due to take place in Vic during September.

The city is located in Catalonia, around 70 kilometres north-east of Barcelona.

The trials event has formed part of the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships since 2017, featuring on the programme alongside the BMX freestyle park, BMX freestyle and cross-country eliminator.

China held the last three editions of the Urban Cycling World Championships, but the 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic also led to this year’s Urban Cycling World Championships in Montpellier being unable to stage trials competition, with the event running from June 4 to 8.

This led to the UCI arranging a separate Trials World Championships.

Vic will host the competition from September 1 to 5, with men’s elite 20 inches and 26” events held as well as a women’s elite competition.

Men’s junior 20” and 26” competitions will also take place.

A prize for the best nation will also be awarded at the event.

The last time Spain hosted the UCI World Championships for trials was in 2000, when they were held in Sierra Nevada as part of the UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships.

The UCI said that trials will again be held as part of the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships in 2022.

Trials competition seeks to test a cyclist’s bike-handling ability in extreme situations, while attempting to complete a course quickly.

Cyclists must cross through gates without putting their feet or part of the bike, except the tyres, on the ground.

Riders collect 10 points at every gate crossed clean, with 60 points is the best possible score per section.
