The Gambia National Olympic Committee’s (GNOC) finances and budget came under scrutiny during the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

A total of 22 members of the GNOC attended the AGM, held at the Paradise Suites Hotel in Serrekunda on June 26.

During the meeting, members were given the opportunity to scrutinise the budget for 2021 as well as activity reports and financial statements for 2017, 2018 and 2019.

"After a long day debate on the reports, they were all finally accepted by the delegates," a statement from the GNOC read.

The meeting also saw the Gambia Badminton Association and the National University Games Federation approved as member federations of the GNOC.

A number of sporting events have been cancelled in The Gambia over the past year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the The Point, GNOC President Dodou "Capi" Joof praised the International Olympic Committee for its support and solidary.

Joof also pledged his commitment to provide assistance to member federations and called on them to fight doping, match-fixing and sexual abuse in sport.

The Point also reports that Abdoulie Jallow, secretary general for GNOC, apologised for the delay in the staging of AGM which was originally due to be held in late 2019 and early 2020.

Jallow reportedly acknowledged the financial challenges faced by members and praised the performance of athletes during the global health crisis.

The Gambia has sent athletes to every Summer Olympic Games held since 1984, but the country has never won a medal.
