The first-ever Asian Beach Sambo Championships have been delayed due to surge in COVID-19 cases in Indonesia, the host nation.

The event - also to be known as the Cup of the President of the Sambo Union of Asia (SUA) - had been due to take place from September 15 to 19 in Bali.

However, with coronavirus cases on the rise in Indonesia and new restrictions about to be introduced in response, local organisers requested that the competition be delayed.

The SUA Executive Committee agreed to postpone the Asian Beach Sambo Championships by almost three months.

December 5 to 10 is the new window identified for the event.

Indonesia reported more than 21,800 new COVID-19 cases today - a record - as well as 467 deaths.

Tighter limits on movement and restrictions on air travel are due to be introduced by Indonesia's Government in response to the worsening crisis.

Indonesia was due to host this year's Asian Sambo Championship as well, before they were moved to Tashkent in Uzbekistan in response to Indonesia's COVID-19 restrictions.
