Two-time major golf champion Ángel Cabrera has been sentenced to two years in prison in Argentina for assaulting his former partner.

Winner of the US Open in 2007 and the Masters in 2009, the 51-year-old was convicted in the province of Cordoba for assaulting, threatening and harassing Cecilia Torres Mana, who was his partner between 2016 and 2018.

Cabrera denied any wrongdoing and his lawyer Miguel Gavier said they would appeal the decision.

Torres Mana, 37, described violence against her and witnesses confirmed these accounts, while footage from security cameras was also said to show the golfer threatening her.

Cabrera was extradited last month from a prison in Brazil to face the charges in his home nation and had been detained since January.

The golfer committed the crimes between 2016 and 2020 and was a fugitive in Argentina since August 2020 after he failed to appear at a prosecutors office, which led to him being placed on Interpol's Red Notice list.

This issues a worldwide request for police forces to arrest an individual, pending extradition.

Two other women made allegations against Cabrera, including his ex-wife Silvia Rivadero.

Cabrera won the US Open at Oakmont by one shot over Americans Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.

He won a green jacket in 2009 by defeating Americans Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell in a playoff.

The Argentine last competed in a major in 2019, when he missed the Masters cut.
