Starting on Monday (July 12), construction begins on Bell Street in an area that will host street food and drinks vendors as well as live shows.

Main work is set to start in August, which involves demolishing unused buildings on Cleveland Parade and replacing it with a new car park.

This is being paid for through the United Kingdom Government's Future High Street Fund and work is due to finish in 2023.

"This will be transformational for our city centre and will form a key part of Wolverhampton's recovery plan following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic," said Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment.

"Confidence to invest in the city remains high and we are working with a wide range of key partners and stakeholders to continue to stimulate and accelerate growth".

Hosting the cycling time trial is part of a five-year events strategy for the city which also includes British Art Show 9, the Creation Day Festival and the reopening of the Civic Halls.

A third phase is set to start later this year, which will see the Civic Halls reopen in 2022 and a new cycle route implemented.

Wolverhampton was awarded the cycling time trial in September, with the start and finish line located at West Park.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is set to take place from July 28 to August 8.
