Lithuania's Ieva Serapinaite claimed the gold medal in the women's individual after excellent swimming and fencing legs on the fifth day of the European Modern Pentathlon Championships in Nizhny Novgorod in Russia.

She held off the Hungarian pair of Blanka Guzi and Sarolta Simon by a small margin to finish with 1,376 points.

Guzi finished with 1,369, while Simon's total was 1,361.

Despite her ride only having the Lithuanian finish 12th, her second and third-place finishes in swimming and fencing helped her take a commanding lead and kept her spot with a sixth-place finish in the laser run.

Gulnaz Gubaydullina of Russia was fourth on 1,332, having won both the swimming and equestrian events, but finished a disappointing 23rd in the fencing.

Guzi moved into second after she posted the fastest time in the laser run.

Ukraine's Irina Khokhlova finished fifth on 1,326.

Guzi and Simon's totals - along with team mate Kamilla Reti - also gave Hungary the gold medal in the team event with 4,010 points.

Gubaydullina, Adelina Ibatullina and Sophia Kozlova scored 3,900 to give Russia second, while Francesca and Aurora Tognetti and Irene Prampolini claimed bronze for Italy on 3,845.

Lithuania's Serapinaite, Aurelija Tamasauskaite and Gintare Venckauskaite finished a distant fourth.
