The Sri Lanka Golf Union has become the first national sports federation in Sri Lanka to sign a Safe Sport Memorandum of Understanding with the country’s National Olympic Committee (NOC).

Present for the signing were President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) Michael Magala, President of the NOC of Sri Lanka Suresh Subramaniam, chairperson of the NOC Women’s Committee Niloo Jayatilake, chairman of the Junior Development Committee Shirantha Peiris and Women’s Committee member of NOC Sri Lanka Fazil Hussain.

Speaking about the signing Magala said: "Basically this come with gender equality as well as there is safe environment for all sportsmen and women in the country.

"This is equally important to all stakeholders - not only - players, but for the coach or any other official related to the sport and related to the structure of the organisation.

"Going forward, we would have a safe environment for everyone."

The Safe Sport programme falls under the NOC of Sri Lanka’s Prevention of Sexual Harassment Programme.

NOC Sri Lanka Women’s Committee member Hussain added: "Considering the present International Olympic Committee protocols it is great to note that the Golf Union has signed up to adhere to the safe sport practices and gender equality in sports as mentioned.

"In the future unless these protocols are met by associations and federations there would be limitations to participation.

"So this a great move as far as the NOC is concerned and the Golf Union the first association to join us.

"We hope to continue to bring on board all the other Olympic sports associations under this new protocol."
