Natalia Grossman of the United States, who tops the International Federation of Sport Climbing’s world boulder rankings this year, will be one of the favourites at the lead climbing World Cup due to start in Chamonix tomorrow.

Grossman has been in outstanding form this season, winning titles at the back-to-back events in Salt Lake City and becoming the first person to inflict a World Cup bouldering defeat on Slovenia’s multiple world champion Janja Garnbret.

While her surge in success has come too late for her to secure one of the two United States places in Tokyo, where the sport will make its Olympic debut this summer - those have gone to Kyra Condie and Brooke Raboutou - Grossman will be keen to maintain her World Cup standard.

As well as topping the boulder rankings ahead of Garnbret, Grossman is also seventh in the lead rankings this year.

Her opponents in the penultimate World Cup before the Olympic Games in Tokyo that will take place at the foot of Mont Blanc will include Japan’s fifth-ranked Abe Momoko, who like her has not secured one of her country’s two Olympic spots for what will be, as a one-off, a competition combining lead, boulder and speed climbing.

Other strong contenders will include Slovenia’s third and fourth-ranked Vita Lukan and Lucka Rakovec.

Germany’s Tokyo-bound Alexander Megos, who tops the men’s world rankings, will be one of the favourites in a strong men’s field.

Also in the mix will be the second-ranked Italian, Stefano Ghisolfi, third-ranked Spaniard Alberto Gines Lopez and Sean Bailey of the US, who has not earned a Tokyo place but is currently joint fourth in the lead world rankings.

Men’s and women’s semi-finals are scheduled to place tomorrow, with finals due on Tuesday (July 13).
