Vanuatu’s Olympic delegation for Tokyo 2020, including three athletes, has been introduced after their arrival in the Japanese capital.

Rillio Rii will be racing in the men’s single sculls in Japan, whilst also having the honour of being flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony, making him the first rower to do it for Vanuatu.

Rii was chosen to carry the colours of his nation after impressing at the 2019, 2018 and 2015 World Rowing Championships.

Former flag bearer Yoshua Shing will be hoping to record his best Olympic result in the men’s singles table tennis after being defeated in the preliminary round at both London 2012 and Rio 2016.

The team is completed by judoka Hugo Cumbo, who has been selected in the 81 kilogram category for his country.

Williams Worworkon will be Vanuatu’s Chef de Mission for Tokyo 2020 and be supported by team manager David Lolo.

Vanuatu, an island country with an approximate population of 300,000, have competed at every Summer Olympic Games since Seoul 1988 but have never won a medal.

At Rio 2016, Vanuatu were represented by four athletes, which included athletics and boxing, as well as rowing and table tennis.

The biggest team Vanuatu have sent to an Olympics was Barcelona 1992 when they had six athletes, all of whom competed in athletics.
