Competition is set to take place across men’s and women’s sports sambo, men’s combat sambo and men’s and women’s beach sambo categories from tomorrow to July 31 at the Cairo International Stadium.

It is the first major international competition since the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) received full recognition from the International Olympic Committee earlier this month, a landmark described by FIAS President Vasily Shestakov as achieving "mission impossible."

The countries scheduled to take part are Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger and Tunisia, with Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Togo all making their debut appearances at the event.

The tournament is being held within a sanitary bubble, in order to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19, with all participants in the tournament being accommodated within a single hotel.

Team and individual competitions are set to take place, with Cameroon and Morocco among the nations considered among the main favourites.

Action is scheduled to take place tomorrow in the women’s 59 and 72 kilograms and men’s 58, 71, 88kg and +98kg categories in the sambo competition and the 64, 79 and 98kg categories in the combat sambo competition.

Preliminary bouts are scheduled to take place tomorrow morning, with final fights due to follow in the evening, when the Opening Ceremony of the Championships is also set to take place.
