Hosts United States struck with three minutes left of extra time to beat Mexico 1-0 in the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football Gold Cup final.

Miles Robinson rose to head home Kellyn Acosta's free-kick at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, as the Americans regained the trophy from holders Mexico and won it for a seventh time in all.

Mexico, the record winners who were bidding for their 12th title, nearly went in front after 10 minutes but Rogelio Funes Mori's header was well tipped wide by US keeper Matt Turner.

Paul Arriola had a great chance to put the hosts in front after 25 minutes but he struck the post when he had acres of time and space to finish.

After 70 minutes, Arriola missed from close range after the ball dropped following a whipped-in free-kick.

The US won all three of their matches in the knock-out stage 1-0 after late goals.

They beat Jamaica in the quarter-finals thanks to a 83rd minute strike from Matthew Hoppe, and then saw off guest nation Qatar after Gyasi Zardes netted four minutes from time.

Mexico had reached the final in controversial circumstances after beating Canada in the last four.

The referee paused the match after homophobic chanting from Mexicans fans, which led to a lengthy period of stoppage time at the end of the second half.

Hector Herrera then won the game for the Mexicans 2-1 in the 99th minute.
