This year’s World Archery Youth Championships are set to begin tomorrow at the Academy of Physical Education in the Polish city of Wrocław.

The championships feature events in the junior category for under-21s and the cadet category for under-18s.

Competitions are also separated between compound and recurve archery, each of which include men and women’s individual and team events as well as a mixed team competition.

Tomorrow is set to serve as a practice, inspection and meeting day, before competitions are set to commence on Tuesday (August 10).

Fifty-eight national member associations of World Archery are due to be represented.

Qualification for recurve consists of a 70-metre round for juniors and 60m for cadets, with the main tournament running as an Olympic round where archers need to triumph on sets.

The compound category features a 50m qualification round before cumulative matches during the main tournament in which competitors must outscore their opponents within a certain number of arrows to progress.

Compound finals are taking place on Saturday (August 14), with recurve finals following on Sunday (August 15).

Wrocław was only awarded the World Archery Youth Championships in March, having lost out during the original bidding process to Perth.

However, the Australian city had to pull out because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previous events held in Wrocław include the Archery World Cup from 2013 to 2015 and archery events at the World Games in 2017, while the nearby city of Legnica hosted the World Youth Championships in 2011 and the European Championships in 2018.

The championships were first held in 1991, and this will be its 17th edition.

It was hosted by Madrid in 2019, when South Korea and the United States both won four of the available gold medals.

Mexico and India claimed two apiece, while there were also golds for Russia, Norway, Croatia, Chinese Taipei and Colombia.

The next World Archery Youth Championships is due to take place in Limerick in Ireland in 2023.
