The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) has announced that it will once again run a virtual Annual Congress this year because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The virtual Congress is scheduled to be held on August 21.

The WFDF used the virtual format in 2020, and says it received positive feedback from member federations so plans to use the same system.

The governing body’s President Robert “Nob” Rauch confirmed the decision, saying: "WFDF has decided to hold the Congress this year for a second time in a virtual format, continuing our actions to mitigate health and safety issues.

"This virtual format will allow all members of WFDF to be present and participate in the meeting without undue risks.

"We know after the 2020 experience that our member federations supported Congress to be held virtually again given that the virus is regaining strength in many countries with a fourth wave due to the Delta variant.

"We had debuted online attendance as an alternative means of participation at our 2019 Congress in Alataguse in Estonia and therefore have had ample experience to ensure the arrangements are efficient and effective.

"While the virtual format has been satisfactory, our expectation is to resume in-person Congress meetings as of next year."

The Congress will feature discussions on plans to modify the membership structure and rename the Athletes’ Entourage Commission.

In January, the WFDF called off all planned major events for 2021 because of the pandemic, and has not held an international tournament since the 2019 Pan American Ultimate Championships in Sarasota in Florida.

However the European Team Disc Golf Championships is due to be held in Varaždin in Croatia from August 18 to 21, and a number of World Championships in various disciplines are scheduled for 2022.

The Congress plans to discuss how flying disc events can return, the WFDF’s events in 2022 and beyond and its involvement at multi-sport games such as the World Games in Birmingham in Alabama in 2022 and the 2021 World Masters Games in Kansai in Japan, which are being held in May 2022.

The WFDF was founded in 1985, and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
