The United States retained the Under-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup title with a 70-52 victory over Australia in Debrecen today.

The US have now won nine of the past 11 editions of the tournament, and despite a slow start which saw them concede the first five points at the Hodos Imre Sports Hall, they finished quarter one strongly winning seven points in a row.

The US then won the second quarter 18-14 and the third 19-10 to win by 18 points and ensure Australia had to settle for a second consecutive runner-up finish.

Diamond Johnson top scored with 15 points for the US, although Australia can take heart from an improved performance compared to the sides meeting earlier in the tournament, when the US won by 40 points.

In the bronze medal match, hosts Hungary produced a stylish performance to win a first ever women’s under-19 World Cup medal by comfortably beating Mali 88-67.

Classification matches took place to decide the remaining placings, with Canada claiming fifth after overcoming the Czech Republic 72-61.

Spain took seventh after beating Russia 60-51, while Japan claimed ninth with a 68-62 win over France.

Italy finished 11th after an emphatic 80-66 triumph against Egypt, while Korea claimed 13th after overcoming Taiwan 55-50.

Finally, 15th place went to Argentina after they beat fellow South American country Brazil 69-63.
