The North American and the Caribbean Women's Handball Championship is set to get underway tomorrow in Elgin in the United States, with a place at the World Championship on the line.

Greenland, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the US are all set to participate in the Illinois city.

The tournament will initially follow a round-robin format with before the top two teams in the group advance to the final and the bottom two go head-to-head in a third-place playoff.

All of the matches will be played at the Centre of Elgin.

It will be the first time in history that the North American and the Caribbean Women's Handball Championship will be organised by the USA Team Handball.

It also acts as the qualification tournament for this year's World Championship, with top team directly qualifying for the event to be held in Spain in December.

Greenland's Lykke Frank Hansen is expected to be one of the star players of the tournament considering her impressive performances for Danish side DNK Nykøbing Falster Håndboldklub in the European Handball Federation (EHF) European League.

She will face a tough battle against American goalkeeper Sophie Fasold, who turns out for German outfit TSV Owschlag.

Fasold won silver at the 2017 North American and the Caribbean Women's Handball Championship in Puerto Rico and has also played at the Pan American Games for her country.

Cuba won the last edition of the North American and the Caribbean Women's Handball Championship, in 2019.
