Coverage from the fireball crash of former Formula One driver Romain Grosjean is one of the winners from the 2021 SPORTEL Awards, which took place today at the Prince Pierre Room of the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

Titled "Romain Grosjean's Escape - Bahrain 2020", the footage from Phil Rorke of Formula One Management Limited took the Best Slow Motion Prize.

Grosjean, who was born in Switzerland, but has dual nationality in France, narrowly escaped death at the Bahrain Grand Prix last season when his Haas car collided with a barrier at high speed, leading to his vehicle going up in flames.

Despite being wedged into the barrier, Grosjean escaped with just minor burns.

Oscar Lago of Spanish football league LaLiga was given the Innovation Prize for the "use of cinematic cameras in live broadcast", while the Discovery Prize was won by Guillaume Papin and Julien Ababsa of France Télévisions for their programme Toujours se relever.


Nick Story of Story Productions took the Best Promotion Programme prize for the promotion of Formula Dreams, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees claimed the Advertising Prize in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee for The Journey, showing the adversity refugees face.

Paola Calvo of Tumult Film won the Peace and Sport Documentary Prize for their release Luchadoras showing women training in professional wrestling in Ciudad Juárez, a city known for its high-rate of murder amongst women.

The Sport Book Prize went to TrashTalk for Le plus grand livre de Basketball de tous les temps, a comprehensive guide to the sport of basketball, given for its fantastic photography.

The Jury Prize went to the documentary Faut qu'on parle by Lyes Houhou and Arnaud Bonnin, which features six sportspeople who speak about being gay athletes.

In literature, former Denmark and Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was presented with the Autobiography Award for his book ONE: My Autobiography.

Double judo gold medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, France's Clarisse Agbegnenou, signed copies of her new book Combattre pour être soi, while world freestyle ski champion Kevin Rolland presented his new documentary Resilience.
