Spencer Smith has won the first leg of the Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Šamorín in Slovakia by the finest of margins.

The American recorded a time of 39.57 seconds to pip Germany's Christian Ahlmann to the victory by 0.02secs.

The result means that Smith moves up to seventh in the overall standings for the 2021 season.

Smith took home €99,000 (£83,548/$114,837) in prize money for his win with Selle Français Theodore Manciais.

He is just two points away from sixth placed Spaniard Sergio Alvarez Moya but still some way off the podium spots as Britain's Ben Maher occupies third place on 228 points.

Jur Vrieling rounded out the top three in Slovakia as he finished the course in exactly 40 seconds.

Sweden's Peder Fredricson remains top of the season's leaderboard despite an eighth placed finish.

Olivier Robert of France missed the chance to make up ground on his rival as he clocked in with a time of 72.13 to place 13th.

That resulted in a 17-point gap opening up between the top two.

Meanwhile, Edwina Tops-Alexander had a catastrophic time in Šamorín.

As Maher was not competing, it presented the perfect opportunity for the Australian to leapfrog him into third place.

However, she only finished in 75.81 leaving her five points behind the British rider with 223.

Week two of the Šamorín event is set to take place from October 21 to 23.
