Turkish Taekwondo Federation President Metin Şahin has described his election to the World Taekwondo Council for the sixth time as a "great honour".

Şahin earned his seat at the world governing body's General Assembly, which was held online earlier this month.

He had previously been elected for a role in 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017.

This time, he received the third-highest number of votes out of the 33 candidates standing.

"First of all, being elected to the biggest organisation of taekwondo for the sixth time in a row is a great honour for both myself and my country," Şahin said.

"Being the person with the third-highest number of votes in an election with many candidates and many criteria is an indicator of the prestige shown to our country, rather than myself.

"We always say 'Turkey is and will continue to be one of the countries that has the biggest say in World Taekwondo'.

"I wish the results to be beneficial for taekwondo both in the world and in our country."

Turkey won two bronze medals at the rearranged Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in July.

Hakan Reçber reached the podium in the men's 68 kilograms division, and Hatice Kübra İlgün did likewise in the women's 57kg.

At London 2012, Servet Tazegül won gold for Turkey in the men's 68kg.
