Vicky Persinger and Chris Plys defeated Jamie Sinclair and Rich Ruohonen 7-6 in the final game of the United States Olympic Trials for Mixed Doubles Curling to advance to the Olympic Qualification Event in The Netherlands.

Persinger and Plys opened with the hammer as the pair had the highest seed heading into the playoff round of the tournament in the Minnesotan city of Eveleth.

The pair got off to a slow start, being held to a single point in the first end after failing an attempt to knock their opponents stone out of play in hopes of scoring a counter at Curl Mesabi.

Sinclair and Ruohonen quickly took a 2-1 lead in the second end but missed a chance to add to their score by narrowly missing the target, known as the house.

The lead changed hands once more in the second end after securing another two points.

Their stones were surrounded by a bundle from the opposition, so the decision was made to throw away the final shot to avoid any potential danger.

The eventual winners pulled away slightly in the fourth end by adding another point to go 4-2 up.

The fifth and sixth ends were even contests as both teams secured a point in each to bring the score to 6-5.

Sinclair and Ruohonen elected to use their power play in the seventh end but a draw attempt to keep a chance at two points alive backfired.

The shot hit another stone and stayed in the same spot instead of producing a takeout, which resulted in a single point to make it 6-6 and hand the advantage over going into the last end.

Persinger stepped up to take the final shot of the game.

She successfully cleared all of Sinclair and Ruohonen's stones from the house to secure the victory with a single point.

With the win, Persinger and Ply advance to the Mixed Doubles Olympic Qualification Event in Leeuwarden in The Netherlands from December 5 to 9.

The top two of 14 teams will qualify for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
