The FIAS has confirmed to insidethegames that a total of 22 candidates are standing - six women and 16 men representing 21 different countries from Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America.

Secretary general Roberto Ferraris of Italy and current Executive Committee members Monique Athanase of the Seychelles, Cesar Arteaga of Venezuela, Tatjana Trivic of Serbia, Merampi Iliadis of Greece, Nobuyuki Asai of Japan, Vladimir Yaprintsev of Belarus and Vadim Rogach of Ukraine are seeking re-election.

The other candidates are Kazakh duo Zhandos Kemelbayev and Amantai Asamidanov, Djekhun Mammedov of Azerbaijan, Mariya Oryashkova of Bulgaria, Francois Mbassi of Cameron, Czech Anna Korchagina, Avtandil Tsintsadze of Georgia, Orsolya Papp-Marta of Hungary, Shay Gaizinger of Israel, South Korea Mun Seong-cheon, Lalita Roshni Balkissoon of Mauritius, Alexander Korsik of Russia, Angel Luis Gimenez Bravo of Spain and Mikhail Kozitskiy of the United States.

A vote is set to take place tomorrow with the successful candidates given four-year terms.

This year’s Congress is being held on the eve of the World Championships, scheduled to run from Friday (November 12) to Sunday (November 14) in Tashkent.

FIAS President Vasily Shestakov will open the Congress after he was unanimously re-elected as head of the organisation last November.

The Russian official has been in charge of the FIAS since 2009 and will remain at the helm until November 2025.

Shestakov will present his annual report to the Congress after what has been a memorable year for the sport.

The FIAS gained full recognition at the International Olympic Committee Session prior to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in July.

Ferraris will present proposals for changes to FIAS statutes and items brought forward by National Federations and the Executive Committee.

There will also be a report from the FIAS Financial Commission where members will assess the organisation's accounts, an auditor’s report and the provisional budget for 2022 will also be presented.

A decision will be made on the date and venue for the next FIAS Congress before the meeting draws to a close.

The FIAS has also confirmed that its Athletes’ Commission election will take place at the World Championships.

With 10 sambists in the running, all athletes competing in Tashkent will have the chance to vote for three representatives from eligible candidates.

Svetlana Timoshenko of Belarus, Bulgarian Mariya Oryashkova, Paule Sitcheping of Cameroon, Jule-Marie Horn of Germany, Shin Jae-yong of South Korea, Karina Stefanovic of Lithuania, Angel Delgado of Mexico, Artem Osipenko of Russia, Uzbekistan's Sarbon Ernazarov and Maria Guedez of Venezuela are all standing.

Those successful will serve four-year terms.
