The University Sports Federation of Peru (FEDUP) is aiming to create a Volunteer Leaders Academy.

David Timoteo Charo, the FEDUP President, confirmed the move in an interview with the International University Sports Federation (FISU) website.

"Sports volunteering is capable of uniting and helping the acquisition of attitudes and skills that not only serve for sports practice, but [can] also have an amazing impact on the daily life in society," he said.

It is hoped the Academy will be finalised in the second semester this year.

Volunteers have played an increased role in university sport in Peru during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people have been needed to manage online events while esports has come to the fore.

Jobs have included arranging award ceremonies.

"The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we practice sports," Charo added.

"The FEDUP, like all institutions, are governed according to the provisions of the Peruvian Government."

The FISU has its own Volunteer Leaders Academy, which trains university students on the skills and areas of expertise it takes to host international championship events.

The Academy holds annual in-person meetings, although this year's - which was planned for Kazan - was moved online because of the pandemic.
