The 54-year-old, who competed at five consecutive Commonwealth Games in triathlon, was confirmed to his new position by the Gibraltar Commonwealth Games Association (GCGA) and announced the veteran's retirement too.

"Gibraltar's participation at the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next summer cranked up the gears again with the naming of the team's general management," read a statement from the GCGA.

"Somebody used to the top of the podium is retiring triathlete Chris Walker who takes on the role as Chef de Mission."

Walker debuted at the Games in Manchester 2002 and represented Gibraltar at the next four as well.

His last appearance was at Gold Coast 2018 when he was 50 years old, as he finished 29th from a field of 36.

Walker's appointment was announced alongside news that the general team management would be split into two due to the Athletes' Village not being completed.

Linda Alvarez is to be based at the Birmingham University complex, while Brian Buckley is to be based in Warwick.

Gibraltar is expected to take 22 athletes to Birmingham 2022.

Next year's Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 8 2022.
